Dr. Pendergast graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1986, and completed a psychiatry residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1990. He served as Director of the Psychiatric Consultation Service at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for nine years, and accepted his first NCPHP position as Associate Medical Director of North Carolina Physicians Health Program in 1999. He was appointed as NCPHP Medical Director and CEO in 2004, served as CEO until 2016, and continues in an emeritus role. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He served as President of the Federation of State Physicians Health Programs (2012-2014), is currently serving on the FSPHP Board of Directors (2017-2019). He is Board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and the American Board of Addiction Medicine. He is also Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry.
