ACGME Presentation
Physician Health Programs and GME: A Candid Conversation

February 22, 2025 at 12:45 PM-2:00 PM CT
Nashville, TN

Session Description:

In this engaging and inspiring session, attendees will have a rare opportunity to hear the personal stories of physicians who have lived experience of addiction and recovery and how graduate medical education (GME) and physician health programs (PHPs) can facilitate life-and career-altering transitions to health for residents in difficulty.  A panel of presenters, representing the resident, PHP, and GME perspectives will illuminate best practices, opportunities for improvement, and advocacy targets that can help GME and PHP programs deliver on a promise of hope and healing while mitigating risk of adverse professional consequences that can discourage residents from seeking and accepting help when needed.  Ample opportunity for questions and dialogue with presenters will help attendees tailor strategies to their unique circumstances.

Session Objectives:

  1. Summarize the Physician Health Program (PHP) model and how GME programs can effectively engage with PHPs
  2. State key outcomes that demonstrate the effectiveness of the PHP model
  3. Identify advocacy targets that can reduce adverse outcomes for those who are engaged in PHP services
