JMR Article Validates Critical Role PHPs Play in Supporting Health Professionals in Need
|
In his recent Journal of Medical Regulation (JMR) commentary, Dr. Justin Bullock, a nephrology fellow at the University of Washington, shares his deeply personal perspective on navigating medical regulation as a physician with bipolar disorder.
His story centers on experiences that occurred during his residency in California – a cautionary tale of the challenges that health professionals often face in the absence of a Physician Health Program (PHP) to guide appropriate management when concerns of impairment arise. It underscores the importance of our continuing efforts to support enabling legislation so that every state benefits from having a compassionate, confidential, and highly effective PHP.
Whether we agree with all of Dr. Bullock’s ideas is less important than the rational discourse he invites. In the dialectic, we test our notions of what is possible and find opportunities for flexibility without compromising safety. His commentary simultaneously supports the work PHPs do while contributing to critical conversations about the structural changes that are needed to foster more supportive environments for those in the profession who are navigating mental health challenges.
